Things that cost real money
The conversion action type trap
To import offline conversions through the Google Ads API, the conversion action has to be created as an upload type. The interface does not offer that option and defaults to a website type action instead, so it can only be created through the API.
Unrecognized tracking macros fail silently
There is no campaignname macro in Google Ads. The real one is campaignid. Use the wrong one and Google does not error and does not warn, it passes the literal text straight through.
The toggle you see may not be the one bidding reads
The primary conversion flag on a conversion action is largely a display setting. Smart Bidding consults a separate goal resource, and the goal layer overrides the action layer.
Click level data has a hard ninety day wall
Google will not return click level detail older than ninety days. It is not a setting or a retention tier, it is a platform limit.
Your best identity key may not be the click ID
In a recent audit, 29.9 percent of leads carried a Google click identifier and 73.2 percent carried an email address.
The most clicked keyword can produce nothing
In one account, the single most clicked keyword across a seventy four day window produced zero leads. Not a poor rate, zero.
